Ewert, Caroline (1855 - 6 OCT 1905)
Mrs. Caroline Ewert, wife of Carl Ewert, was burned to death Friday afternoon at her home in the town of Beaver, Clark County, Wis.
She was heating a pan of linseed oil and turpentine over a stove when the liquid caught fire and in attempting to throw the pan out of doors her clothing became ignited, burning it entirely from her body.
Just how the accident occurred we are unable to ascertain, but it is thought that Mrs. Ewert attempted to replenish the fire and on opening the stove the flames darted out and the inflammable stuff was ignited. It is supposed she ran to the door with the pan in her hands and on opening it the wind blew the fiery tongues back into her face and her clothing caught.
She endeavored to extinguish the blaze but the fiend claimed its victim and before she could assist herself her clothing had burned and her body badly charred.
At the time of the accident Mrs. Ewert was alone with her 4-year-old child, but her cries for aid attracted the attention of men working near by who ran to her assistance. They were too late however, but rang an alarm and called the husband from a field.
Dr. Clark of Unity was called and eased the pain, but the work of the flames had been fatal and after seven hours of agony her soul passed away.
Caroline Zeigert was born in Horst, Germany in 1855. She was baptized and confirmed in that country. There she met and was married to Carl Ewert in 1881 and in 1882 they immigrated to Clark County, Wis., where they have since resided.
Of the union 11 children were born, four of whom have died, while 7 survive their mother. Besides these and the husband she leaves four grandchildren, two brothers and an aged mother to mourn her loss.
The funeral was held in Beaver Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. Lange officiating. Interment was made in Beaver Cemetery.
